Western Cape Government of Health and Wellness

Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP)

Overview

The EPWP is a nation-wide programme which seeks to draw significant numbers of unemployed persons into a temporary workplace, so that unemployed youth are able gain skills while they work and increase their capacity to earn an income. The objective of internships is to stimulate employment opportunities, address skill shortages and to adequately prepare learners for the workplace through workplace-based learning opportunities and experience. Ultimately the objective is to provide opportunities for interns to pursue available employment within Government. This is dependent on the availability of funded posts and a formal competitive process.

The aim of the EPWP programme

Expanded Public Works Program is aimed at providing the unemployed youth of the Western Cape with an employment opportunity within the public sector via different internships. The department is committed to making opportunities available to not only matriculants and graduates but also applicants with Adult Basic Education certificates. The aim is to use the departmental resources in educating unskilled members of the public to become employable. The intention is to reduce the high unemployment rate of South Africa.

Benefits of being an intern: Interns will receive continuous on the job training and development which would make them qualify for not only public sector posts but also private. Interns are mentored by an experienced member of staff throughout the internship. While in the employ of the Western Cape Government, you will qualify for posts advertised internally and externally. As a staff member, interns and their immediate families have access to support from the Wellness component. A monthly stipend will be paid for the duration of the internship.

Types of internships offered: • PAY interns • Admin Interns • Pharmacy Assistants • Graduate interns • Work Integrated learners (TVET colleges) • Community First Aid Responders • Forensic Pathology Assistants • Mortuary Assistants • Patient Care Assistants
